As a British Expat currently living in Istanbul, I spend a large proportion of my time extolling the virtues of this beautiful city to potential visitors and future residents. The sights, sounds and rhythm of Istanbul life are hard to capture succinctly. This is part of the reason why I began this blog; to archive and immortalise all that I’ve seen and learnt here. However, the one question that I’m asked more frequently than any other is this: What is your favourite Turkish food? After months of agonising, evaluating and processing I have finally arrived at a conclusive answer….Kahvaltı! (or Turkish Breakfast to us foreigners). Technically this is cheating as Kahvaltı cannot be encompassed by one dish, it is not simply a meal but an experience. A table filled with an ottoman-esque banquet of sweet and savoury breakfast items; freshly baked bread, regional cheeses, eggs, homemade preserves and all manner of local treats. A chance to pause, contemplate and enjoy the company of friends and family. Most importantly it’s a beautiful reminder that family, generosity and community are a central part of Turkish culture.

Out of the 1000’s of Breakfast restaurants in Istanbul, with varying degrees of price and quality, where should you choose to partake in this experience? I narrowed down five of my favourite places that are sure to put a smile on your face and keep you content until dinner time.

Kahvalti is the true taste of Turkish culture

The Crowd Pleaser – Çesme Bazlama Kahvaltı

Originating in Çeşme, Izmir, this restaurant now has branches in Nişantaşi on the European side of Istanbul and Kadikoy on the Asian side. They serve an UNLIMITED Turkish breakfast including an excellent range of fresh and tasty hot and cold dishes, as well as classic Turkish tea. The décor of the restaurant is Mediterranean themed, reminiscent of its southern Anatolian origins. Service is friendly and fast although be prepared to queue for a table on the weekends as they do not take bookings. Come hungry, it’s worth the wait.

The Hidden Gem – Süreya Kahvaltı

I was initially reluctant to include this suggestion as I’ve come to think of it as my lovely little secret. Just a short stroll from my neighbourhood, it’s a local favourite that that is simply too good not to share. Unassuming from the outside, venture through the small entrance where you’ll usually find a beaming lady preparing fresh Gözleme (a delicious flatbread with a savoury filling of choice) and you’ll be transported to a beautiful garden space to enjoy your breakfast experience. Although this place is best enjoyed in summer, the terrace also includes a retractable roof and heating for cooler seasons. Breakfast is the standard, delicious set selection with home-made preserves being a particular highlight. If you are fortunate, you may be greeted by the warming, comforting scent of fruits and spices bubbling up into a new batch of marmalade. No reservations taken so best suited for smaller groups.

The Foodie Fave: Van kahvalti evi

Unlike the previous venue Van Kahvalti is no secret, as evidenced by the queues of tourists and Turks alike found mulling around the entrance on a Saturday morning. But do not be perturbed, just put your name down on the list, grab a coffee from one of the local vendors and they’ll have you seated before you know it. What makes Van particularly special is that it’s menu is based on eastern Turkish style breakfast. Meaning you’ll be able to try a wide variety of dishes, including some regional specialities you won’t find elsewhere. Along with the standard breakfast order. You can choose to add your own additional dishes. I’d recommend the menemen and Pişi for the full experience.

For the Gram : Seven Hills

Looking for somewhere to celebrate a special occasion or just get that perfect Instagram shot? Seven Hills might just be the spot for you. Nestled in the city’s historic district, Sultanahmet, this rooftop restaurant delivers a delicious traditional breakfast menu and impeccable service along with stunning views over the Istanbul skyline. Unfortunately, breakfast is only served until 12 here. However, the restaurant is open all day with a menu of Turkish classics and international fare. Prices are much higher than average but the view over the Bosporus at sunset is arguably priceless.

The one with history: Malta Pavilion

If you’re looking to combine your breakfast experience with a little historical sightseeing, you can do just that at our next spot. Malta Pavilion, is a historic imperial Ottoman residence located within the garden of the Yıldız Palace in Istanbul, Turkey. Channel your inner sultan and enjoy a delicious spread in the charming outdoor terrace overlooking the park and Bosphorus strait. Prices are affordable and service is warm and efficient. The restaurant also serves lunch and dinner so you can expect a decadent experience at any time of the day.
